"positive thinking" is no weapon against fear. Only positive faith can rout the black menace of fear and give life radiance.
Marion Hilliary
As the deer pants for the water, So pants my soul for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. My tears have been my food day and night. When I remember these things, I pour out my soul to you. For I used to go with the multitude to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise. O my God, my soul is cast down within me; Therefore I will remember You from the land of the living The LORD will command His loving kindness in the daytime, And in the night His song shall be with me—A prayer to the God of my life. Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; for I shall yet praise Him, The help of my countenance and my God.

Give ear, O LORD, to my prayer; And listen to my cry. In the day of my trouble I will call upon You, For You will answer me. For You are great, and do wondrous things; You alone are God. Teach me Your way, O LORD; I will walk in Your truth; I will praise You, O Lord my God, with all my heart, And I will glorify Your name forevermore. For You, O Lord, are a God full of compassion, and gracious, Longsuffering and full of mercy and truth. Oh, turn to me, and have mercy on me!

If Christ seldom makes offers without demands, He also seldom makes demands without offers. He offers His strength to enable us to meet His demands.
John Stott
Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, Or ever You had formed the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God. You know all our iniquities, Our secret sins are not hidden from you. The days of our lives are seventy years; And if by reason of strength they are eighty years, Yet they are filled with labor and sorrow; For we are soon cut off, and we fly away. So teach us to number our days, That we may gain a heart of wisdom. Return, O LORD! And have compassion on Your servants. Oh, satisfy us early with Your mercy, That we may rejoice and be glad all our days! Give us as many happy days as we have had days of sorrow. May we, Your servants see your works, And Your glory. And let the beauty of the LORD our God be upon us, And establish the work of our hands for us; Yes, establish the work of our hands

2 Chron 3; Psalm 80; 1 Peter 3
Discontent is a sin that is its own punishment and makes men torment themselves; it makes the spirit sad, the body sick, and all the enjoyments sour; it is the heaviness of the heart and the rottenness of the bones. It is a sin that is its own parent. It arises not from the condition, but from the mind. As we find Paul contented in a prison, so Ahab discontent in a palace.
Matthew Henry
Hear my prayer, O LORD, Give In Your faithfulness answer me. Do not enter into judgment with Your servant, For in Your sight no one living is righteous. I spread out my hands to You; My soul longs for You like a thirsty land. Cause me to hear Your lovingkindness in the morning, For in You do I trust; Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, For I lift up my soul to You. Deliver me, O LORD, from my enemies; In You I take shelter. Teach me to do Your will, For You are my God; Your Spirit is good. Lead me in the land of uprightness. Revive me, O LORD, for Your name’s sake! For Your righteousness’ sake bring my soul out of trouble. For I am Your servant.

Superficiality is the curse of our age. The doctrine of instant satisfaction is a primary spiritual problem. The desperate need today is not for a greater number of intelligent people or gifted people, but for deep people.
Richard Foster
O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, You are God, You alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth. Incline Your ear, O LORD, and hear; open Your eyes, O LORD, and see; and hear all the words of those who reproach the living God. Now therefore, O LORD our God, save us from their hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You are the LORD, You alone."

2 Chron 1; Psalm 78; 1 Peter 1
Perhaps if there were more of that intense distress for souls that leads to tears, we should more frequently see the results we desire. Sometimes it may be that while we are complaining of the hardness of the hearts of those we are seeking to benefit, the hardness of our own hearts and our feeble apprehension of the solemn reality of eternal things may be the true cause of our want of success.
Hudson Taylor
Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for You. You show loving kindness to thousands, and repay the iniquity of the fathers and their children after them—the Great, the Mighty God, whose name is the LORD of hosts. You are great in counsel and mighty in work, for your eyes are open to all the ways of the sons of men, to give everyone according to his ways and according to the fruit of his doings. You have made Yourself a name, as it is this day. but we have not obeyed Your voice or walked in Your ways. We have not done all that You commanded us to Forgive us we pray.

The average Christian is so cold and contented with his wretched condition that there is no vacuum of desire into which the blessed Spirit can rush in satisfying fullness.
A.W. Tozer
To the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness, though we have rebelled against Him. We have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God, to walk in His laws, which He set before us by His servants the prophets. Yes, we all have transgressed Your law, and have not to obeyed Your voice; therefore the curse has been poured out on us, because we have sinned against You. And You have confirmed His words, which You spoke against us and against our judges who judged us, by bringing upon us great disaster. All this disaster has come upon us; yet we have not made our prayer before the LORD our God, that we might turn from our iniquities and understand Your truth. And now, O Lord our God, we have sinned, we have done wickedly! O Lord, according to all Your righteousness, I pray, let Your anger and Your fury be turned away from Your people, for we are a reproach to all those around us. Now therefore, our God, hear the prayer of Your servant, and his supplications, and for the Lord’s sake cause Your face to shine on us. O my God, incline Your ear and hear; open Your eyes and see our desolations; for we do not present our supplications before You because of our righteous deeds, but because of Your great mercies. O Lord, hear! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, listen and act! Do not delay for Your own sake, my God, and for Your people are called by Your name."

"You never hear Jesus say in Pilate's judgment hall one word that would let you imagine that He was sorry that He had undertaken so costly a sacrifice for us. When His hands are pierced, when He is parched with fever, His tongue dried up like a shard of pottery, when His whole body is dissolved into the dust of death, you never hear a groan or a shriek that looks like Jesus is going back on His commitment."
Charles Spurgeon
O Lord, great and awesome God, who keeps His covenant and mercy with those who love Him, and with those who keep His commandments, we have sinned and committed iniquity, we have done wickedly and rebelled, even by departing from Your precepts and Your judgments. Neither have we heeded Your servants the prophets, who spoke in Your name to our fathers and all the people of the land. O Lord, righteousness belongs to You, but to us shame of face, as it is this day—because of the unfaithfulness which we have committed against You. O Lord, to us belongs shame of face because we have sinned against You. To the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness.

Ah, LORD, I know that You are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, One who relents from doing harm. I cried out to the LORD because of my affliction, And He answered me. "Out of the belly of Sheol I cried, And You heard my voice. For You cast me into the deep And the floods surrounded me. 4 Then I said, ‘I have been cast out of Your sight; Yet I will look again toward Your holy temple.’ For You have brought up my life from the pit, O LORD, my God. When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the LORD; And my prayer went up to You, Into Your holy temple. I will sacrifice to You With the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay what I have vowed. The LORD is in His holy temple. Let all the earth keep silence before Him. O LORD, I have heard your speech and was afraid; O LORD, revive Your work in the midst of the years! In the midst of the years make it known; In wrath remember mercy. Though the fig tree may not blossom, Nor fruit be on the vines; Though the labor of the olive may fail, And the fields yield no food; Though the flock may be cut off from the fold, And there be no herd in the stalls— Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation.

And help us to Love our enemies, do good to those who hate us, bless those who curse us, and we pray for those who spitefully use us. If you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses. So Lord empower us, more than anything to show our love for you by keeping your commandments. May your Holy Spirit be our helper and may we be aware that he lives inside us and will be in us forever. Christ had no interest in gathering vast crowds of professed adherents who would melt away as soon as they found out what following Him actually demanded of them. In our own presentation of Christ’s gospel, therefore, we need to lay a similar stress on the cost of following Christ and make sinners face it soberly before we urge them to respond to the message of free forgiveness. In common honesty, we must not conceal the fact that free forgiveness in one sense will cost everything.
J. I. Packer
"Father, Glorify Your Son, as Your Son Jesus has glorified You. You have given us eternal life. And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. Help me to glorify You on earth. And to finish the work You have given Me to do. I pray that you will be glorified in me. Holy Father, keep us through Your name for we have been given to you. Make us one as you are one. I pray that we may have your joy fulfilled in our hearts. I do not pray that You should take us out of the world, but that You should keep us from the evil one. Help us to realize that we are not of this world, just as you are not of the world.

The Declaration of Independence was approved JULY 4, 1776. John Hancock signed first, saying "the price on my head has just doubled." Benjamin Franklin said "We must hang together or most assuredly we shall hang separately." Of the 56 signers: 17 lost their fortunes, 12 had their homes destroyed, 5 became prisoners of war, 1 had two sons imprisoned on the British starving ship Jersey, 1 had a son killed in battle, 1 had his wife die from harsh prison treatment and 9 signers died during the War. As Samuel Adams signed the Declaration, he said: "We have this day restored the Sovereign to whom all men ought to be obedient. He reigns in heaven and from the rising to the setting of the sun, let His kingdom come." John Adams said: "I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty."
Now I pray to God that you will do no evil, but that you do what is honorable, I pray that you will do nothing against the truth, but for the truth. For we are glad when you are strong, And this also we pray, that you may be made complete.

I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend what is the width and length and depth and height— to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
